Malpensa Airport

Malpensa Airport
, according to data collected in the year 2017, was ranked 21st among the busiest airports in Europe. In 2017 this airport handled a total of 18,947,808 passengers, with the annual volume averaged at approximately 22 million. It is the largest airport in Milan and was formerly known as the Aeroporto Citta di Milano. In terms of location this airport is situated about 40 kilometers to the north-west of central Milan, Italy.

This airport is located in the Province of Varese and well within the communes of Cardano al Campo, Somma Lombardo - where it is located, Casorate Sempione, Ferno, Lonate Pozzolo, Samarate, and also Vizzola. It is a public airport which is operated by the Societa Enti Aeroportuali (SEA), Aeroporti di Milano. The airport effectively serves the city of Milan and is connected to the city by the highway of Milano-Varese.

Milan Malpensa Airport is not ranked first just because of its large size; it is also the first in the country in terms of the overall volume of traffic that it handles. Being large in capacity enables it to effectively and efficiently handle the needs of both domestic and international passengers, with the higher traffic volume being in international flights as opposed to domestic ones. In the year 2000 a project by the name Malpensa was entrusted with the responsibility of enlarging and upgrading the airport.

To facilitate its expansion the airport received funding from the European Union as part of the Trans European Transport Network Programme. This was done because while the area was rich in industry, trade and commerce, it was found to be lacking in infrastructure.

Milan airport was favored because of its strategic location, and which enables it to connect all the air traffic coming from the Mediterranean, and consequently connecting the largest European markets.
